This CD/DVD is exactly what you should expect if you are in the market. I own some but not all of the Foo albums. This CD gave me the songs that I wanted from the remaining albums, in addition to the two unreleased tracks. There are songs from the foo catalog that are not on this CD that are better tracks, however this is exactly what it is called "greatest hits", and Dave Grohl has been the first to say this. If you arent a fan but like some of the songs and you find yourself curious I recommend picking it up, and springing for the DVD is worth it just because the foo fighters have a great sense of humor on display in their videos. Worth my money and my time, check it out!
i bought this for someone that live in my house. it is a little hard for me but i must admit that the band is hot. my friend loves it and has worn me out with the cd. he says it is one of the best bands ever. now, for the videos. did they read the scripts before agreeing to do these videos? i will say up front, i HATE jack black so including him in the video did not help. the music is good; not my usual taste but i do appreciate.
This is great value for your money. Includes the most POPULAR tunes, although I'm sure Grohl and company think that several other tracks in their catalog are better (He even hints about that in the liner notes). My main beef is the fact that the original video for Breakout wasn't included. While the live version from Hyde Park is incredibly good footage, the original video was one of the band's best and featured the Foos at their comical best in my opinion (Remember the night at the drive in theater? Hilarious stuff). The new track Wheels sounds great, influenced heavily by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, almost sounding like a mashup of Learning to Fly (Petty's song) and Mary Jane's Last Dance. The Foo Fighters have had a great run so far and this collection will please the most hard-core to casual fan. Great job guys, let's hope the next 15 years are as good or better!!
If you are looking at this CD, you are probably doing so because either (1) You like the Foo Fighters, but don't own much of their music, or (2) You own several cds and are wondering whether you need to buy their greatest hits cd as well. The answer to both questions is simple: buy the disc. Although I don't consider myself a die hard fan, I have acquired all of their cds over the years. Most of their cds are very good, but there are a number of throw away tracks on each and I always find myself hitting the skip button on the cd player at least two or three times per cd. This Greatest Hits collection is well assembled and features damn near all of the songs you could hope for from a Greatest Hits package from them. Additionally, the inclusion of acoustic version of Skin and Bones and Everlong are fantastic (and will keep you from having to buy the Skin and Bones acoustic cd, which is good, but whose only stand out track is included here). The new songs of the disc aren't great. "Wheels" sounds like something they recorded a few years ago, but wisely decided not to include on any other cd. It is very boring rock, and always reminds me of something a lesser band would have recorded (although Dave Grohl's vocals almost save it). "Word for Word" is standard Foo Fighters fare and would have fit perfectly on pretty much any Foo Fighters album. The song is strong, but not as good as the greatest hits collected here. It is worth a dozen listens or so. The real reason to buy this disc is the bonus DVD, which includes (as far as I can tell) every, or nearly every video the Foo Fighters have ever made (plus a few live performances). The DVD is strong, and easily makes this set worth purchasing. Altogether, a great collection.
First, it should be made known that a lot of 'DVD' extras included in other greatest hits compilations put out by other artists you're lucky if you get more than maybe a couple of music videos (the same ones you saw on TV 50 times a week or more already), maybe a recorded 'hello' from the band. Not at all the case with this set. The DVD has a lot of music videos, and some live concert footage. It is (in my opinion) a great bit of work, and fans will absolutely appreciate it. The back of the case even tells you where each of the live sets was recorded, in case you didn't know otherwise. The CD portion of the set has all of my favorites (who am I kidding? they're ALL favorites anyway). You will find their known songs on the CD. I say this, because a while ago I bought a greatest hits CD from a band who will not be named, and their world-wide best known song wasn't included. Not so with this one. You'll probably find everything popular, but I'm sure they couldn't fit everything they ever did on a single CD. A good mix of their newer and older stuff.Foo Fighters are a band where it is great listening to them live, but a lot of their videos are really incredible, too. Some are comedic, some can carry deep messages, some are just plain fun. Many fall into more than one category.I'm not going to comment much on the liner notes. Lots of images of the band over the years. Everyone feels differently about these things. Some want more pictures, some want more details, lyrics, scribblings, other things. I didn't dislike anything here.A testament to how good this set is, is the fact I keep having to loan it to friends almost every other day. I've literally had very little actual physical time with it. Even non-fans love it. If you're thinking about getting a copy for yourself, don't think. Get it. You might want to get 2, because I can see it getting lost if enough people borrow it. LOL.
